PS5 fan speed will be adjusted through system updates based on temperature data

PS5’s advanced technology will allow Sony to adjust its fan speed on the fly, based on data gathered by the system itself through years of work on next-generation games.

The chief engineer at SIE Yasuhiro Ootori revealed the news during an interview with Japanese outlet 4Gamer.net, where he described how the system works depending on temperatures reached on titles.

“Various games will be released in the future, and data on the APU’s (Accelerated Processing Unit) behavior in each game will be collected. We have a plan to optimize the fan control based on this data,” Ootori said.

“PS5 has three temperature sensors on the mainboard to control the fan speed based on the internal temperature of the APU and the highest temperature of the three temperature sensors,” he added.

“These fan control parameters will also be updated via online updates,” which means that additional patches could make the fan move faster or slower, depending on those data.

Should Sony note that temperatures are too high on an average, fans could run faster and likely grow noisier, and that will only require a system update. Also, there’s a chance that, by default, the fan speed could be set on a higher value, and so have them activating at fast speed even at a low temperature. In that case, users could witness improvements for what matters noise and perhaps note temperature changes.

PS5’s fan is the reason why it is so big, Sony revealed, as the same performance could have been achieved with two fans, but they would have been more costly.
